Back in the Game!

I just pounded out 4 sweaty, grueling miles!  I decided that since my snake-filled driveway was giving me too many excuses to not run, I'd head to town and get my miles in on the treadmill.  It's been several months since I've stepped foot on a treadmill, but today I was just feeling it for some reason.  I did 3-1 and 4-1 intervals, and even though at one point I thought I might puke, it felt SO GOOD!

My half-marathon training doesn't officially start until next Sunday, but I'm going to do the first week twice.  "Long run" number one is outta the way!  Could be sad that 4 miles is my long run, but I think it's a pretty good starting point!

April Goals

Upon reviewing my March goals, I found that I didn't complete ANY of them!  Geez, I'm such a slacker.  However, April brings new possibilities, and I'm bound and determined to actually hit my goals for a month.  So here they are:
  • Run 40+ miles.  Since my lofty goal of 60 hasn't happened yet, I'm going to scale down and work my way up.
  • Do 30 Day Shred ten times.  I'm in love with this, but I'd like to have a balance between running and Shredding.
  • Weigh 157 by April 30.  I hate doing weight goals, but I'm so close to this I can taste it!  Right now I'm sitting at 160 (I say that, but my scale almost tells me I'm at 159), so I'll only have to lose 3 pounds in a MONTH--I think that's attainable without being a freak about it.
Besides my monthly goals, I'm also going to do weekly goals on Wednesdays (because that's when I weigh in).  For this week, though, I'm going to do them today.  Here we go:
  • Take my vitamins EVERY DAY!
  • Drink 70+ ounces of water EVERY DAY!
  • Get 14 miles in (through 4/14)!
  • Shred 3 times!
Even though I've been completely slacking on my workouts, I've still been eating pretty good (minus Mini Eggs).  I got some good hiking in this weekend (in the snow), so I've counted that as a mile even though I think it was further.

Tonight I'm planning on running since I'm not going to get to do Jillian tonight.  It's a sin in our house to not watch the final game of March Madness, so my odds of controlling the remote tonight are slim to none.

How are everyone else's goals going?  Are you accomplishing them or is there some slacking going on like me? (don't worry, definitely not judging!)

Three Things Thursday

 Here it goes:
  1. I got my hair cut last night after work.  It's hot!  I totally (like, valley girl?) had a run planned after I got done at the stylist.  But she straightened and fixed my hair!  I don't do that very often, so I had to take advantage of the fact that my hair was pretty, and I skipped my workout.  And when I showered this morning I didn't wash my hair, and it is still pretty.  Anyone else ever do that?
  2. I'm SO close to sending out my save-the-dates!  We're reaching the point where it's almost pointless to send them out, so I've been working my butt off getting them finished.  Minus a few printer problems I'm having, they're coming along nicely!
  3. I have 6 miles planned for today's run.  I'm going to do it tonight after work, and I don't have any excuses this time.  Especially since I'll have to wash my hair tonight, because it won't look as pretty tomorrow if I don't.

Blah Tuesday

I'm having a little trouble coming up with something good to talk about today.  In fact, that's pretty much how my whole day is--boring and blah!  I've been working hard at the office all afternoon (so glad I was actually busy today!) and now I'm getting off work and catching an early dinner with Dustin.

After dinner he's heading over to a friend's to pick his winners for the college basketball practice....I'll be heading over to the gym to get in a "last chance workout" before my weigh-in tomorrow.  I've got a lot of good exercise planned, and I'm really looking forward to kicking my butt!  Hopefully my inner Jillian voice will come out when I'm thinking about giving up!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I guess I never updated about the rest of my weekend.  It wasn't really that exciting, but here goes.  I got home on Saturday after my 5k and an afternoon of planting hanging baskets at Dustin's family's greenhouse.  He had told me one of his old college buddies was coming down because he had a bachelor party that weekend.  Well, his friend's bachelor party made their way to our house, where they shot squirrels and blew things up like only men can do.  After that, six random (ok, five because we knew Dustin's buddy already) people came over for dinner (thank goodness they brought it) and ended up drinking beer at our house all night long.
After that, they proceeded to stay at our house, which at the moment is not set up for one or two overnight guests, let alone six, so they all slept on the hardwood floor or wherever they could find some couch space.   Dustin and I got up Sunday morning and cooked them all breakfast, and after that they all headed out to shoot some more stuff ALL FREAKING DAY LONG!  I wouldn't have minded so much, but it was a gorgeous day and Dustin and I have A TON of crap to get done before the wedding.  Once they finally left around 5 that evening, they had fed Dustin enough alcohol to last me a lifetime, rendering him useless to me for the rest of the day!  Love it when my weekend plans get spoiled!
Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine!
Mental Toughness
I'm having a little trouble keeping my thoughts in the right place today.  I need to get a workout in, but I can already tell it's going to be a struggle to get to the gym.  Mentally, anyway.  I'm up to the challenge, though, and one thing I'm going to need for my half-marathon is mental toughness.  So with that:
"Caitlin, get your ASS to the gym tonight!"
Yep, just what I needed!
Shredded
Last night I did day 2 of The Shred.  It went really well, although I have troubles with one of the exercises.  Otherwise I don't really have to do any of the modified versions for it, so I'm feeling good about it!  I had a nice healthy dinner and even allowed dessert (low fat ice cream, yummy!) and was still low in my calorie range!
This morning I woke up early and put in The Shred again for day 3.  Man, it kind of kicked my ass!  I got through it fine, but I'm certainly sore now!  I wanted to do it this morning to get into the habit of doing it early rather than at night, so hopefully this will be a good transition.
It's funny how working out in the morning can have such a great effect on me.  I'm doing well in my eating, and have not felt the need to eat from the candy dish at work or eat any unneccessary treats.  I'll have to continue on this pattern!
Have a great Tuesday!  Weigh-in day tomorrow....I'm hoping for some better results this week!
Finding Motivation
As you can tell from my last few posts (which haven't been since last week...slacker), I have had a hard time getting motivated to workout.  And eat healthy.  And care that I'm not eating healthy and not working out.
Even though I'm having a little trouble though, it makes me realize how much this weight loss/get fit journey is a life-long journey.  I'm going to have bumps in the road.  Everyone does.  The only thing that matters is that I recognize the bumps, accept them, and learn from them.  I think the fact that I'm on here blogging about it shows that I am at least conscious of the fact that I'm struggling.  And you know what the cool thing is?  I know that I have some neat bloggy friends that have been/are in the same boat as me.  So thanks for being part of my journey!
I did exercise last night, the first time since last week.  To sum it up, I did not finish my January Miles Challenge.  In fact, I was 6 miles short.  So, to make up for that, I'm doing 66 miles in February.  So far I'm on the right track and I've got three down.  I'm going to the gym tonight and I'm going to get another 3 (at least) out of the way.  I think one of my downfalls last month was trying to go too hard too fast.  If I keep my mileage shorter except for maybe one day a week when I up it, I will *hopefully* be more inclined to stick to my plan.
I also will strength train this evening because I made a goal last Wednesday to do it twice a week.  I just need to get it in tonight to complete that goal.
I guess you can say I'm still motivated enough to get through the negative thoughts, at least on the exercise front.  Food is a slightly different story.  I've been doing a lot of afternoon boredom snacking, which needs to stop.  Now.  Needless to say, I will not be needing any sort of dessert tonight when I get home!
Have a good day!  Just keep pushing if you are struggling, take a break when you need to, but get back on the wagon!
Oh and Biggest Loser is on tonight!  Yay for motivation!  Especially since tomorrow is Weigh-In Wednesday...not sure what that is going to bring!
Just thought I'd leave a picture of my favorite place since I was boring you with that post!
This is my home!
This is definitely newsworthy...
I officially have 6 Followers!!!!  Holy crap, how did that happen?!?!  Not that I'm complaining...I am truly jealous of those that have hundreds of followers.  It means that people are actually listening to what they have to say.  So now, I have 6 peeps that are potentially listening to my story, as boring as it may be.  Thanks!
In other news, I logged 3 miles on the treadmill last night and got an upper body strength workout in.  I did the strength workout first, which might have been a mistake, because by the time I got on the treadmill my motivation was gone.  Completely gone. Vanished.
So while my arms were barely working after lifting, I got on the treadmill.  I walked a lap, and then thought, "I might just not do this tonight."  Really?  My goodness, it's not like I had to go 10 miles or anything.  All I wanted to do was 3 miles, not that hard.  It took all of my willpower to continue, but I did it.  I had to read my Runner's World magazine and walk the last half mile, but I made it.
This tells me a little about myself.  On any given day in the "past", I would have just got off and went home.  I would have felt guilty and then I would have binged because I felt guilty for not working out.  Not last night!  I finished those miles and then picked up Subway for me and Dustin.  I ate healthy and didn't even have ice cream for dessert (only because we didn't get home until after 9...I probably would have had it if I was home).  I think I should get an 'A' for yesterday!
Not sure if I'm going to work out tonight.  I should, especially because Dustin won't be there for me to come home to, so I should just suck it up and get some more miles in.  But then again, I'm kind of tired and not might not do it.  If I don't, my eating will still be on track though.  I'll think about it...
Lunchtime Crunch!
2 miles down during lunch!  Kicking ass and taking names!
Delicious Brownies!
Ok, so apparently since I finally worked out last night and kicked my ass, I find it ok to eat 3 brownies at work today.  Not just one moment of weakness, but three.  Good job, Caitlin.  I better get my ass into the gym tonight, no excuses!
Forget about yesterday....focus on today!
Thank God each day is a NEW day!  I ended the night so bad last night, and I was really worried that it would carry over into today, but so far so good.  I had an ok day yesterday, except for the fact that I skipped my workout and instead drank 2 beers (light at least) before dinner and then waited about 2 hours (or what seemed like an eternity) to have dinner, which ended up being pizza.  Needless to say, Dustin had a cranky bitch on his hands after that fiasco was over.  He is really starting to understand the importance of getting food in my belly in a timely manner, especially since he's seen the results of that not happening about 3 times in the last week.
But...
Today is a new day!  I'm doing much better, and I have a looooooonnnnnnngggggg workout planned for tonight so I can make up some extra miles because I'm seriously behind.  Like I need to run 10 miles a day behind to catch up.  Ok, not that bad, but I've got to get my 60 miles in by January 29 because I'm heading out of town to shop for wedding dresses on Jan. 30, so there will probably be no running, except maybe from some bridezillas at David's Bridal.
I've been super on track with eating today, and for some reason unknown to me, I've only had breakfast and no snack and I'M NOT HUNGRY!  When does that ever happen?  Like maybe when I'm sleeping!
Also, in other breaking news, I signed up for SparkPeople yesterday.  I'm glad I did, because I need start tracking better, and its fun.  I have no idea what happens when I get SparkPoints, but I like seeing them add up, so more power to them!
Check back tomorrow morning and make sure I've added several miles to my post.  I'm going to get in a good one!
Motivation
I'm really trying hard to stay motivated, but I can already feel the self-doubt coming on.  How horrible is that?  I guess not really, because that is why most people stay at the same weight or gain weight.  Self-doubt is something that will never go away, no matter how hard you try to overcome it.  And that is the secret to keeping those feelings at bay.  TRYING.  Working hard to combat those feelings.  It's a life process, one that is neverending and tiresome.  I'm sure I'll give in many more times in my life, but it's up to me to bounce back from that self-doubt and become self-confidant and know that this journey (life journey) is worth my time.
And hello!!  I've got a freakin' wedding to keep me motivated!!!  Only 24 more days until I start trying on dresses, so get with it Caitlin!!!  That is enough time to get a good base in for my weight loss and fitness, and enough time to tone up and look decent in a dress!  I've got one week to get that damn scale down to 163.  I can do it, damn it!
*And there you have the inner workings of my mind.  Do I maybe sound a little like Jillian?  Not quite, but I like to think I do.  I wish she was in my mind telling me what to do.
So tonight it's back to the gym, working on my fitness, working on my January Miles Challenge.  Not making excuses and going home instead!  (By the way, that is what happened to me last night, but it was a great night of rest!)  Getting in a good 4 miles to catch up (because its about a 2 mile a day challenge).  Getting in some ab work.  Pushing myself because I CAN!
And after that gym session, I'm going to the store to get healthy stuff to make dinner and getting home so I can finish watching The Biggest Loser.  I had to start it late last night because someone wanted to watch the Orange Bowl instead.  So then I got tired and we went to bed.  And even though I already know who gets voted off, I love watching their stories!  So motivating!
And that's all for now folks!
Weigh-In Wednesday
Just a quickie for the moment...
165
I was going to put 164 but that would be lying and cheating.  You see, I don't have a digital scale, so I can't put the exact number down.  There are no .3 pound losses when it comes to my weight loss.  So when the scale does not definitively say 164, I cannot put 164 down.  It was close, but not quite there, so I'm sticking with 165.  Maybe next week it will be 163 instead.  I just need to get my ass in gear.  More to follow later.
2009 Recap and Weekend Results
Happy New Year!  Let's kick our 2010 into gear and have a  fulfilling and awesome year!  I've got several things on my plate this year, including my wedding (YEAH!).  I've got a lot to prepare for, and a lot to be thankful for!
2009 Recap:
  • February - Traveled to Australia with my good friend Liz.  Had a fantastic time, and now I'm wishing I could go back and do it all over again!
  • May-August - Worked in fire again, and semi-loved it, but was grateful to find a new venue
  • September - Started a detail into my current job
  • October - Moved in with Dustin (MY FIANCE!)
  • December - Finally found out that I got my job!  Permanent, full-time.  Benefits!  Yay!
  • December - Got engaged!  Dustin proposed on Christmas morning!  It was perfect!
  • Lost 5 pounds...not as much as I want, but a start
So, all in all, a pretty good year.  Some ups and downs, but mostly ups.  And good ups at that.  Wow, my writing skills are great today!  Sorry about that.
New Year's Eve was pretty fun, although I feel like an old fart, because as soon as the clock struck midnight, Dustin and I were pretty much passed out and ready for bed!  I think booze had a little bit to do with it, though.  I didn't exactly eat well that night and I consumed quite a few tasty adult beverages, but it was fun!
New Year's Day was considerably uneventful.  In fact, we pretty much laid in bed all day, watching football and napping.  The good thing was that I didn't eat much; the bad was that what I did eat wasn't that great for me and I did not hydrate myself well from the night before.  Bad Caitlin!
Saturday was a different story!  We were having my parents (and his) over for dinner that night, so we frantically cleaned the house all day long!  It is amazing how our cleaning habits seem to work that way.  I love having a clean house but I don't take the time to do it very often, resulting in piles of crap everywhere.  But when you say someone is coming over, it is balls to the wall (excuse the expression) cleaning time, and I get a clean house as a result.  The only exception to this is that damn spare bedroom that you can hardly walk into because of the clutter.  I need to get on that goal of getting it organized!
Yesterday Dustin, a friend of ours, and I went and cut firewood all day long!  We have some juniper trees on our property that his dad had previously knocked down with the cat, and all of this good firewood has been brewing as a result.  So we packed up the chainsaws (yes, I can run a chainsaw, which is something I'm extremely proud of) and headed out to cut.  It was a great day with perfect weather; it felt like April, not the first of January.  I also got a great workout in, as I discovered that running the saw is a great core workout!  My abs are sore today, as well as my forearms.
After we finished that project, we checked some traps of ours and went home and SHOWERED.  I was in desperate need of one after how much sweat poured out when cutting firewood.  Now here comes the best part of the day:
Even though I got a great workout in all day, I still went to the gym!!!!!!  Needless to say, I'm pretty excited and proud of my decision!  Most days, I would have called it good after cutting, but yesterday I knew that I wanted to get a good run in.  Maybe it is the New Year resolution motivation coming out, but I think there was something more to it, like maybe my mind and my body are answering to the same voice in my head that says I want to be fit and lose weight!  Non-scale victory right there!
Speaking of the scale, my next weigh-in is Wednesday.  I'm pretty excited about it to be honest.  Not sure if the scale is going to budge, but I know it won't go up, and I'm in the process of making it go down.  Just keep swimming, as Dori would say.
By the way, I'm 4 miles down on my 60 Mile January Challenge.  56 to go!
Wedding Planning
I'm stressing!  I'm only like two days into wedding planning and it's already getting hard.  Not that it won't be fun, because I'm pretty excited about it.  We've come up with a date that will actually work with almost everybody else's schedules, and I think we've decided to have it out at the ranch where we live, which will be awesome!
However, we have quite a few home improvement projects to add to the list of things that need to get done before the wedding.  So not only do we have wedding planning and work to deal with, but also multiple home projects that HAVE TO GET DONE!  I'm in the process of making a list, and every time I think of something, I add it to the list.  I don't think I would survive without one!
Yesterday was OK for eating, but not fantastic, and I finished the night by having two beers, so that was another 220 calories or so added to what I already ate for the day.  I need to stop getting those empty calories!  However, I still like to drink every now and then so what I really need to do is plan for it.  For instance, I'll probably do a little drinking on New Years, so I need to eat good and get some good workouts into combat those empty calories.
I think tomorrow I'll be generic and post some New Years goals.  Really they are for my own personal benefit though, so I'm not worried about being a poser.  I'm going to get a workout in tonight, also, so hold me accountable: if I don't happen to slip that one into the entry tomorrow you'll know that I didn't get a workout in!
Holy Snack Attack!
So far today, my eating habits have been astonishing!  I started off the morning with one egg and two slices of *gasp* bacon, which apparently left something to be desired in my hunger bank.  I barely made it through a few hours at work when the dreaded munchies hit me, and I had just so happened to 'accidentally' grab a snack baggie of cookies that a friend had given us as I headed out the door today.  So those ended up in my mouth at an early point today.
I guess it hasn't been a horrible day, but not one for the books.  I haven't got a workout in yet, and as much as I hope it will happen tonight, I'm just not sure it will.  I'm doing a wreath making class at 5 and after I assume I will be famished and will want food. Immediately.  (Isn't it great how I can see in the future?  I know myself all too well!)  However, after that I need to get my ass to the gym and get on the treadmill for some interval training.
I have been catching up on some blogs that I'm subscribed to, and even though I find them highly motivating, it still doesn't seem to curb my snacking (while I'm reading them).  It just goes to show that motivation and willpower do not always go hand-in-hand.
So the half-marathon.  I think I've found one to do, and I'm pretty excited about it.  It is in August, but the website hasn't updated from the 2009 race yet, so I'm not sure exactly when.  Once I get it, though, it will be posted, possibly with my receipt for paying to run the race.  That will be key for me, because knowing that I have actually paid good money to enter a race will be a great motivator.
I'm also going to do my first 5k in March, which I'm also not sure when that is exactly.  It is a local run called the Shamrock Run in honor of St. Patrick's Day.  The key to this will be not going out and drinking the night before (sidenote: I was going to run our local 5k during Labor Day this year, but lo and behold I got sauced the night before and felt like crap).
So here is a tentative timeline of my goals:
Mid-March 2010--Shamrock 5k
May/June 2010--*find a 10k to put in this slot
August 2010--Haulin' Aspen Half-Marathon
I'm pretty proud of myself for at least getting this far.  One small step at a time is going to lead me to success.  Check back tomorrow to see if I actually got my workout in tonight!
